This 10,6 km trail along Vereda do Urzal has the peculiarity of following an old path, connecting the south and north coasts of the island of Madeira.
This moderate difficulty adventure, with an estimated duration of 4:30 hours, begins at Fajã dos Cardos, in Curral das Freiras.
The presence of exotic vegetation accompanies the beginning of Vereda do Urzal, but the surprises in the natural surroundings are far from ending there.
As the walk progresses, you will find an area with vivid natural vegetation, both high altitude and belonging to the indigenous Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.
Vereda do Urzal starts with a climb up to Boca das Torrinhas, where there is an intersection that will allow you to access Pico Ruivo from the connection to trail PR 1.3 - Vereda da Encumeada.
This is a place with an admirable mountain landscape, where the imposing peaks surrounding the Curral das Freiras valley stand out. It deserves a stop for contemplation.
From here onwards, the walk along Vereda do Urzal is always downhill, until you reach Lombo do Urzal, in the parish of Boaventura.
Take the opportunity to contemplate the dense vegetation of this area and fill your lungs with fresh air.
