About Largo do Pelourinho
Palm trees, bougainvillea and dragon trees are the main protagonists of the Largo Pelourinho Garden. They provide bright colours to this public space located next to Largo do Pelourinho, right in the centre of Vila Baleira. A beautiful place to rest and get to know the local heritage.
This garden links the city's main buildings, in particular the old Town Hall, part of which dates back to the 16th century. Next to it we find the Mother Church Nossa Senhora da Piedade, built on the site of the first chapel built in Porto Santo between 1420 and 1446, after it was burned down by pirates in the 17th century. However, it is still possible to see part of that original building in the Gothic chapel that stands on the south side of the premises.
The garden is also connected to the new and modern Town Hall building and the Centro Cultural de Congressos, where the city's main events are held. Nearby, Rua Cristóvão Colombo is another point of interest worthy of a visit. This is the Misericórdia Chapel, a small Mannerist building from the 16th century.
Take advantage of this tour to get to know a little more of Vila Baleira's architectural and historical heritage.
