Casa Velha do Palheiro
Luxury, history and golf
Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in the early 19th century as a hunting lodge for the Count of Carvalhal, and later purchased by John Burden Blandy, in 1885. It was carefully restored in 1996 and opened on 1 May 1997 as one of Madeira's first 5-star inns. Today, Casa Velha do Palheiro is part of the Palheiro Nature Estate.
Since it was bought by the Blandy family in 1885, successive generations have changed the direction of the business from traditional farming to tourism and leisure. This strong hospitality tradition continues to this day and is present in every aspect of the estate, from golf and hotel to gardens and cut flowers; from property sales to management, and to its sports fishing boat. The names Blandy and Palheiro are synonymous with quality on the island of Madeira and beyond.
