It was a warm summer morning when we set off for Madeira’s north coast on a two-day getaway from our base in Funchal. Following the winding roads up the mountains, surrounded by lush vegetation, we couldn’t stop saying “Woooow!” as one spectacular view after another revealed itself around each bend. It quickly became clear that Madeira’s north coast is incredibly green, rugged, and untouched. These are all things we love, so we couldn’t wait to explore the hikes, viewpoints, and volcanic pools! Our first stop was Miradouro do Guindaste, a stunning coastal viewpoint that's especially delightful at sunrise, as it faces east. With spectacular views of the rugged cliffs and the crashing waves below, it was a fantastic way to start our north coast trip.

We then continued northwest towards the Casas Típicas de Santana. These triangular-shaped, thatched-roof houses represent a traditional Madeira style and are a must-see when visiting the island’s north coast.
After this cultural stop, we headed to another incredible viewpoint, just a few minutes’ drive from the Santana houses. The only way to see this spectacular view is from Hotel Quinta do Furão. Although you park on their property, the viewpoint is open to the public and can be accessed without disturbing the guests. We were amazed by this unique spot, where you can see not only dramatic cliffs and ocean views but also a beautiful waterfall plunging directly into the sea. Pretty cool and definitely worth a visit! You can also enjoy a coffee or meal at the hotel’s restaurant — also named Quinta do Furão — which makes it a perfect lunch or coffee break. We had their apple pie with coffee, and it was the best apple pie we've ever had!
With our bellies full, we continued our journey along Madeira's north coast. It was time to lace up our hiking shoes and explore the Laurissilva forest, nestled in a stunning valley with otherworldly views. Along the trail, we passed several waterfalls and admired the lush landscape, surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains on the island.

After finishing the hike, we made our way to our hotel in São Vicente for the night. This picturesque village features an old chapel atop a hill overlooking the valley and surrounding mountains. Since a beautiful sunrise was predicted for the next morning, we woke up early to catch the first light in the valley. We love photographing sunrises and sunsets, so we made the most of the opportunity to capture the São Vicente chapel and the stunning scenery.

As the day was pleasant and sunny, we decided to spend a few relaxing hours at Seixal Beach before leaving the hotel. It’s just a 10-minute drive from São Vicente, so we were able to take a dip in the ocean and return to the hotel to freshen up before continuing with our plans.
Driving along the same route, we made sure not to miss the unique Miradouro do Véu da Noiva. This viewpoint offers a stunning view of a waterfall cascading into the ocean from a high cliff and is definitely worth a visit.
Another highlight on our itinerary was the dramatic rock formations at Ribeira da Janela. These striking, pointed rocks rise sharply from the sea, creating a powerful scene as the waves crash against them. It’s a short stop, but an essential one when touring Madeira’s north coast.

As the temperature rose and the sun climbed higher, it was the perfect time for a swim in the famous Porto Moniz Natural Pools. We decided to spend the rest of our day here. This beautiful facility has several volcanic pools, and the entrance fee is €3. Sunbeds and parasols can be rented for €5 each. There’s even an on-site restaurant where you can order drinks and food. It’s the perfect spot to relax on a sunny day in Madeira.

After a few hours of swimming and soaking up the sun, we planned to visit one final viewpoint to catch the sunset. So we packed up and drove to Ponta do Tristão, one of the best places in Madeira to watch the sunset, offering stunning views over the coastal cliffs. We walked a short trail to the cliff’s edge, where there were several peaceful spots to sit and enjoy the spectacular view. We were treated to a beautiful sunset as the orange sun slowly sank into the ocean, casting a golden glow on the cliffs. What we especially loved about this spot was having it all to ourselves — unlike some of the more crowded sunset viewpoints on the northwest coast.

With the sun already set, it was time to drive back to Funchal after an amazing two-day adventure on Madeira’s north coast. We had a fantastic time and strongly recommend that everyone spend at least two days exploring the region’s stunning hikes, viewpoints, and volcanic pools.
