One of the best things about these pools is that they are scattered across the island, each offering a unique experience. Having lived in Madeira for seven months, we visited all these natural pools and are excited to share what you can expect. Porto Moniz and Doca do Cavacas are fantastic choices if you prefer plenty of facilities. If you’re drawn to a more untouched, natural setting, then Seixal Natural Pools might be your best bet. Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools
A 50-minute drive from Funchal, Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools are the most famous natural pools in Madeira. Spanning 3,800 m², this vast area offers plenty of space to explore, relax, and take in the breathtaking views of the rugged north coast.
AWe loved how well-organized everything was, with clean changing rooms, showers, and a restaurant. Renting sunbeds and umbrellas made for a comfortable and leisurely day. Swimming in the various pool sections was a highlight, especially with the dramatic ocean waves crashing against the rocks. There’s even a diving board for the adventurous – though the waves were a little intense for us to try it that day!
One of the best aspects of these pools is their safety. Unlike swimming in the open ocean, these pools provide a tranquil saltwater experience without battling strong currents. Plus, saltwater is much gentler on your skin than chlorinated pools!
As the day ended, we grabbed a meal at the on-site restaurant before heading to Ponta do Tristão, a scenic viewpoint just 15 minutes away. Facing west, this looked like a great spot to watch the sunset, which we love to do. It turned out to be a fantastic sunset spot facing the rugged cliffs and beautiful coastline that turned golden while the sun was setting. It was the perfect conclusion to a day spent enjoying the most renowned natural swimming pools in Madeira.
Seixal Natural Pools
On another day exploring Madeira’s north coast, we set out to catch the sunrise at Seixal Natural Pools, also know as Poças das Lesmas. Nestled beside Seixal Beach, these pools provided a serene setting to start the morning. Sitting on the lava rocks at the edge of the pools, we watched as the first light of day illuminated the landscape – it was pure magic.
Though smaller than the other pools, Seixal’s Natural Pools have a special charm. A picturesque arch marks the pool’s entrance, and on a calm day, the still water creates a perfect mirror-like reflection. We couldn’t resist capturing this breathtaking sight in a photo!
Seixal Natural Pools may seem calm and inviting, but the sea can be full of surprises. Sudden, powerful waves can catch swimmers off guard, turning a tranquil dip into a risky challenge. To fully enjoy this natural wonder, stay alert, read the ocean’s mood, and resist the temptation to swim when the waters seem unpredictable.
Doca do Cavacas
Located near Funchal, between Lido and Formosa Beach, Doca do Cavacas is a natural bathing complex featuring three separate pools with direct sea access. It offers showers, toilets, changing rooms, and even an on-site seafood restaurant – everything you need for a relaxing day by the water.
We spent a few hours here on a sunny afternoon, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. However, since there wasn’t much space for sunbathing, we focused on swimming. The views of Praia Formosa and Cabo Girão, Europe’s highest sea cliff, were absolutely stunning!
After experiencing these different natural pools, it’s tough to pick a favourite. Each has something unique to offer, whether stunning views, on-site restaurants, or a more secluded atmosphere; however, there’s no denying that Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools are the most popular for good reason. With ample space, excellent facilities, and the option to rent sunbeds and umbrellas, they provide the perfect setting for a full day of relaxation.
