Exploring Madeira on foot is the perfect way to experience the archipelago’s nature up close. From levadas and mountains to coastal paths, the hiking trails of Madeira and Porto Santo allow walkers to admire diverse landscapes and the islands’ rich biodiversity. However, proper preparation before each hike makes all the difference.

From the beginning of 2026, hiking in Madeira remains a unique experience, but it now requires more planning, awareness, and responsibility. With new rules in effect for classified walking trails, this guide covers everything you need to hike on the island safely, responsibly, and in harmony with nature conservation principles.

What Has Changed for Hiking in Madeira in 2026

Since 1 January 2026, access to classified walking trails (PR trails) will require a mandatory reservation. This measure aims to protect natural spaces, improve safety, and ensure a more balanced experience for all walkers.

These rules apply to all visitors, whether walking alone, in a group, or with a guide.

How Hiking Reservations Work in Madeira in 2026

Planning a hike in Madeira begins before you put on your hiking boots. The reservation process is simple but mandatory for all visitors.

Where to Make a Reservation?

All bookings are made through the official SIMplifica platform, the Madeira Regional Government’s service portal. Here you select your trail, date, entry time, and make payment, when applicable.

  1. Access the SIMplifica platform - Go to the portal and select the service for classified walking trails.
  2. Create an account or log in - Reservations require an active account, even for individual hikers.
  3. Choose your trail - Select the trail you want by its official PR code and name.
  4. Select the date - Pick the day you plan to hike.
  5. Select the entry time - Each trail operates with 30-minute entry slots. You must start your hike within your reserved time.
  6. Add participants - Include all group members in the reservation.
  7. Make the payment - Payments are completed online at the end of the process, depending on the visitor type.
  8. Save your confirmation - Keep a digital copy on your phone or print it, as it may be requested during your hike.

What You Should Know Before Booking

  • Make reservations in advance, especially for the most popular trails;
  • If your preferred time slot is full, you will need to select another;
  • Residents — while exempt from payment and reservation — must still register on the portal.

Access Fees and Payments

Access to classified hiking routes requires payment of an access fee:

  • Individual trail fee (except PR1) - 4,50 €
  • PR1 fee (restricted trail, up to Pedra Rija) - 4,50 €
  • Daily fee for combined trails (two or more trails, excluding PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro) - 9,00 €
  • 3-day fee for combined trails - 22,50 €
  • 7-day fee for combined trails -52,50 €

Payments are made at the time of booking.

Trails Covered by the Rules

The new rules apply to all classified PR trails, including some of Madeira’s most iconic hikes:

  • Pico do Areeiro
  • Pico Ruivo
  • Levada das 25 Fontes
  • Levada do Risco
  • Ponta de São Lourenço

Before starting any hike, it’s essential to check if the trail is open, restricted, or temporarily closed. Information available on the hiking page.

Enforcement and Fines

Hiking on a classified trail without a valid reservation may result in fines. As infrações incluem transitar em percursos encerrados, vandalismo, circulação de veículos e não pagamento de taxas. Violating trail rules in the Autonomous Region of Madeira can lead to fines of up to €10,000. Infractions include entering closed trails, vandalism, driving vehicles, and failing to pay fees.

Following the rules is about more than avoiding penalties — it directly contributes to trail preservation and the safety of everyone.

What to Bring for a Hike in Madeira

Even on the most accessible trails, preparation is essential. Always bring:

  • Proper hiking shoes
  • Water and snacks
  • Comfortable clothing and wind- and rain-protection
  • A fully charged phone
  • Sunscreen and a hat

Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so be ready for anything.

Safety and Good Practices in Nature

While hiking in Madeira:

  • Stay on marked trails
  • Don’t leave litter
  • Avoid picking plants or disturbing wildlife
  • Avoid hiking alone whenever possible
  • Inform someone of your planned route

In an emergency, dial 112.
