Our nature

There is a world to explore in Madeira and Porto Santo’s natural spaces. Always do so with the utmost respect for nature.

1. Take only memories

Do not pick plants, flowers, stones, or shells - they are part of the ecosystem and must remain where they belong.

2. Take your waste with you

Never leave rubbish in nature or the sea. Use available bins or keep it until you find one.

3. Animals are not attractions

Do not touch, chase, or feed land or marine species. Human contact disrupts their natural behaviour.

4. Leave it as you found it - or better

Nature belongs to everyone. Keep it intact so others can enjoy it too.

5. Walk safely

Choose routes classified by IFCN and always book your entry through the Simplifica portal. Hike with a partner, stay on the marked path at all times, pay attention to the route, and keep a safe distance from cliffs.

6. Overnight parking of campervans and roof tents requires authorization

In Madeira, campervans and rooftop tents may only stay overnight in designated and properly licensed areas. Authorization from the local authorities is required.

7. Camping only with permission

Madeira has one campsite, located in Ribeira da Janela. There are a few public forest areas where camping is allowed, but only with prior authorisation and subject to availability.

8. Protect the forest

The trees in our forest are centuries old and part of a fragile ecosystem that must be treated with respect. Do not get too close, touch, or hang from trees.

9. Safe and responsible sea use
      • Swim only in authorized and supervised areas;
      • Use suitable equipment for your activity;
      • Follow safety rules and coastal signage;
      • Marine reserves require especially careful conduct.

10. No fires allowed

Do not make barbecues outside designated areas. Use only Forest Parks and Recreation Areas equipped with fireplaces. The use of fire is prohibited outside these areas
