Funchal Cable Car
About the Funchal Cable Car
The Funchal cable car connects downtown Funchal to the parish of Monte, and it has become a must-do tourist activity on the Island of Madeira. In the 20th century, the journey between Funchal and Monte was made by a steam train. With the creation of the Funchal Cable Car, this journey became possible in just 15 minutes, overcoming a 560-metre height difference, while enjoying superb views over the city and the sea.
Totalling 39 cabins, the Funchal Cable Car can transport 800 people per hour. Starting from the Old Town of Funchal, the steel cable is 3,200 metres long.
The Funchal Cable Car is open every day from 9 a.m. The last ride is at 5:45 p.m. Each cabin can accommodate 4 to 6 people.
Tickets for your cable car ride can be purchased on the Madeira Cable Car website or at either of the two terminals.
In addition to being a moving viewpoint, the Funchal Cable Car allows you to comfortably reach one of the most popular areas of Funchal. Once in Monte, visitors can take the opportunity to explore its tropical gardens, architectural heritage, or even experience the iconic basket sledges.
