Hiking along the archipelago's 'levadas' and trails is a rewarding activity. Discover the hiking trails officially classified by the Regional Government of Madeira.
Code of conduct and safety regulations
Here we shall mention some codes of conduct and safety regulations that should always be followed. Please read the information below!
Walking Code:
- Avoid noise or actions against nature
- Do not take plants or animals with you
- Do not throw rubbish away (tissues do not easily decompose)
- Do not light fires
- If you are a smoker do not throw cigarettes ends on the floor, keep them for the dust-bin
- Do not change or damage the signs
For your own safety:
- Before starting out make sure you have update instructions on the route
- Let someone else know where you’re going and when you expect to return
- Be sure to confirm the time it will take so that you can finish before nightfall
- Take some extra food and water with you
- Wear suitable clothes and shoes
- If possible take a mobile phone with you
- In case of heavy rain or strong winds do not go on and/or turn back using the same route
- Don’t take risks

PR 6.4 - Levada Velha do Rabaçal
This route starts at the regional road (ER 105), at Pico Gordo, and to reach Levada Velha do Rabaçal or Levada do Risco, you'll have to walk approximately 800 metres.

PR 6.5 - Vereda do Pico Fernandes
The route along Vereda do Pico Fernandes begins at the regional road (ER 209), on the Paul da Serra plateau, and follows an old footpath to PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, then continues along it to the 25 Fontes lagoon.

PR 6.6 - Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo
The route through Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo starts next to the Caldeira leisure area, also known as the 'Garagem' (garage), which is located on Estrada Dr. Roberto Monteiro, and ends at Casa do Rabaçal, the meeting point for hikers on the various hiking trails in Rabaçal.

PR 6.8 - Levada do Paul II - Um caminho para todos
This route starts next to the Rabaçal loading chamber (ER105) and takes you along Levada do Paul II to Estrada do Rochão, covering a distance of approximately 1,200 metres (2,400 metres round trip).

The theme 'Um caminho para todos' ('A path for everyone') offers people with motor and visual disabilities the chance to enjoy direct contact with nature.

PR 13.1 - Vereda da Palha Carga
The route along Vereda da Palha Carga starts at the regional road (ER 209), next to Louro da Gota, and follows PR 13 Vereda do Fanal for the first 100 metres until you find the turn-off to 25 Fontes on the left.

This route starts on the Paul da Serra plateau, more specifically at Bica da Cana, and along its course you can see various geomorphological and geological.

PR 28 - Levada da Rocha Vermelha
The route starts at the regional road (ER209), in Fanal, and follows PR 13 Vereda do Fanal until it reaches, on the left, the turn-off that takes you to Levada da Rocha Vermelha.
