Reis Magos Fort

About the Reis Magos Fort

Note: CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE.

Set in an idyllic scenery, the Reis Magos Fort is a monument of great historical and landscape interest. It is, therefore, a highly recommended stopping point for visitors to the west coast of the Island of Madeira.

The Reis Magos Fort is located in the parish of Caniço, in the proximity of an important tourist centre, where there is a large concentration of hotels. This fort is next to Reis Magos Beach, which has been noted above all for the excellent quality of the waters that bathe it. Proof of this is that it annually displays its Blue Flag.

Built at a time when pirate and corsair attacks were quite frequent, the Reis Magos Fort served, for several decades, the crucial mission of protecting the local population of this coastal area. It is a quadrangular structure built in the 18th century, consisting of guard installations, oriented towards land and a terrace facing the sea.

Take the opportunity of your visit to this fort and learn about the unrivalled wealth of environmental heritage in this region. Nearby is the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, a veritable oasis for wildlife lovers.
