About A Cidade do Açúcar Museum
With a privileged location, the A Cidade do Açúcar Museum is a space dedicated to the memory of the golden period of the sugar cycle on the island of Madeira. This museum was inaugurated in 1996, in memory of a 19th-century Manueline house that belonged to João Esmeraldo and has another peculiarity: it was the temporary home of the famous navigator Christopher Columbus.
The A Cidade do Açúcar Museum houses a set of pieces that mirror social life in the 15th and 16th centuries. The exhibition area of this museum centre includes a fantastic set of Flemish sculptures and paintings, sugar-forms, silver objects, and also an incredible set of artefacts that were collected from João Esmeraldo's house.
Getting to know the various cultural aspects of the island of Madeira is certainly one of the primary objectives of many visitors to the island. The A Cidade do Açúcar Museum is an important intermediary when it comes to publicising the importance of the historical period of the sugar cycle (15th-16th century) for Madeira's development.
