About the Formosa Beach
To the west of Funchal's centre, in the parish of São Martinho, we find the largest public beach in Madeira.
Formosa Beach - which is actually a complex made up of four beaches - is only a 10-minute drive from the city centre and is one of the most popular bathing areas in the whole region. With a combination of pebbles and black sand, its area stretches over 2 kilometres, attracting hundreds of bathers every day, locals and tourists alike.
Formosa Beach is a good option for both spending a whole day by the sea and going for a quick swim after hours walking and exploring the island. And exercising your body in our waters will feel like an even greater idea when you go for a beer or a 'poncho' in one of the beach bars afterwards, while the last rays of sun dry your skin. On this public beach with free access, the safety of bathers during the bathing season is guaranteed by a team of lifeguards.
There are also various support infrastructures to ensure you have a great day at the beach, such as parking, changing rooms, a first-aid post, a children's playground, and a football pitch.
The largest public beach on the Island of Madeira is located 10 minutes from the centre of Funchal and stretches for 2 Km. Formosa Beach has areas with pebbles and areas with black sand.
