Babosas Chapel

About the Babosas Chapel

Located in the highlands of Funchal, in the parish of Monte, Babosas Chapel was built in the early 20th century by Tristão de França Bettencourt. This religious space was built for a peculiar purpose: to be the centre of the jubilee celebrations of the island of Madeira.

The Babosas Chapel is located at the Babosas square, an easy-access place surrounded by nature, which you shouldn't, under any circumstances, skip during your visit to the parish of Monte. Despite its simple interior, the Babosas Chapel has some noteworthy objects: a fantastic collection of four stained glass windows by Ricardo Leone, and a marble holy water font.

10 February 2010 is remembered as a dark day for the Babosas Chapel. The small temple was completely destroyed by the storm that hit the island, leaving only the main image of its patron saint, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The chapel was rebuilt around 12 years later, on 8 December 2022.
