Carmo Church

About Carmo Church

With an artistic collection of excellence, Carmo Church is one of the most appreciated religious spaces in the city of Funchal. It was built in the second half of the 17th century by Pedro Gonçalves Brandão and is located next to one of the most emblematic and busy streets in Madeira's capital: Rua Fernão de Ornelas.

The church displays a longitudinal floor plan, comprising a single nave, a chancel and a beautiful bell tower. The 18th-century Rococo main façade stands out, with its grey regional stonework. Its incredible architecture can be appreciated, for example, through its chancel with a gilded wood carving Mannerist altarpiece, consisting of a throne and a painting of the patron saint by Madeiran carver Manuel Pereira. The 18th-century tiles depicting Our Lady of Mount Carmel are also noteworthy.

It won't be difficult to include the Carmo Church on your itinerary to the south coast of the island of Madeira. This religious space is open every day and holds Mass regularly, giving you the opportunity to attend a traditional Madeiran Mass.
