Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda
About the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda
Built in the first half of the 16th century, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda has a particular feature: the space is still in the hands of the family that founded the chapel: the Fávila family. Years after its foundation, this small religious space was invaded and consequently vandalised by French corsairs.
Despite the transformations over the years, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda has retained its architectural essence. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the original decoration of this chapel, which is currently standardised with 18th-century decorative elements. Nearly 500 years after it was built, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, in Funchal, continues to be a weekly meeting point for dozens of believers.
