Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias
About the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias
Located in the municipality of Funchal, next to Santa Catarina Park, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias was built during the 17th century by the sergeant-major of Funchal: Diogo da Costa do Quintal and his wife Mécia de Vasconcelos.
The inside of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias is a true delight to look at. The gold carvings on the altarpieces, the polychrome paintings combined with the movement created by the tiles and the coffered ceiling made of painted wood, create an incredible coherence of decoration and communication.
Interestingly enough, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias is attached to the iconic Quinta Vigia, the official residence of the President of the Regional Government. This small religious temple houses a set of pieces of great artistic interest. Integrated into the altarpiece is a painting of the chapel's patron saint - Our Lady of Sorrows - with a sword stuck in her chest as a sign of pain and suffering. Also noteworthy are the tile panels depicting 'La Fontaine's Fables' and the canvases on the side walls depicting five of the Virgin's seven sorrows.
