The parish of São Martinho in Funchal is home to one of the most modern temples on the island of Madeira: the Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré. This religious space was built to become the new parish centre of Nazaré, a status that belonged to the Chapel of Nazaré from 1960 until the dedication of the current church in 2002.
Located on Avenida Colégio Militar, Madeira's Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré was designed in a modern and innovative style by architect José Rafael Botelho. Outside, its imposing tower stands out at a height of about 40 metres. Its inside houses some very valuable pieces, such as the baptismal font, the tabernacle and the altar. It should be noted that all these works are carved in green marble.
