Church of Santa Luzia

About the Church of Santa Luzia

The Church of Santa Luzia was built in the 18th century as the seat of a parish with around 400 years of existence. This religious space was built in the vicinity of the old chapel, which had to be demolished due to its advanced deterioration.

The Church of Santa Luzia in Funchal has a chancel enclosed by a round triumphal arch and a main façade that fits in with the late-Mannerist models. The inside is delightful: it features neo-Baroque and late Baroque compositions, most notably the 18th-century gilded and polychrome carved altarpieces. Interestingly enough, many of the artistic objects in the church came from the former Convent of São Francisco. Noteworthy among these artistic pieces is the English-made pipe organ, dating from between 1815 and 1820.

Not far from this religious temple, there is a unique and charming garden, perfect for enjoying family time. Well, combining a visit to the Santa Luzia Church with a visit to the garden will make your visit to this place a more complete and enriching experience
