Monte Church

About Monte Church

One of the most beautiful and historic churches on the island of Madeira, the Monte Church is located in the highlands of Funchal. There is an extremely interesting feature about this religious space: Quinta do Monte was the last address of Charles I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, who died there in 1922. The body of the Austro-Hungarian emperor rests in this church to this day.

When you arrive at Monte Church in Funchal, you'll come across one of the most beautiful landscapes on the island of Madeira. Just as beautiful as the landscape is an 18th-century church that houses various artistic objects worth contemplating, such as some tile panels alluding to Nossa Senhora do Monte and a set of paintings from the late 18th century by well-known painter Nicolau Ferreira.

The parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte organises one of the oldest and most popular festivals on the island of Madeira. The festival is celebrated in honour of Nossa Senhora do Monte. It begins with novenas on 5 August and ends with the big festival on 14 and 15 August.
