Nazaré Chapel
About Nazaré Chapel
Built in 1627, the Nazaré Chapel is a 17th-century religious temple founded by Martim Vaz de Caires, an important figure in Madeiran society at the time. This small religious temple has been classified as a property of public interest since the 20th century, more precisely since 1940.
Despite the small size of the space, the Nazaré Chapel has several sets of tile panels inside, which generate interest and curiosity among locals and tourists alike. On the side walls, there is a tile collection dating from between 1718 and 1725, and a panel next to the Gospel depicting the 'Miracle of Our Lady of Nazareth to D. Fuas Roupinho'. On the outside, the most striking features are the beautiful gable façade topped by a cross and a Mannerist portal.
With almost 400 years of existence, the Nazaré Chapel is one of the main religious temples of worship to Our Lady of Nazareth. Devotion among the nobility was considered normal: King Manuel I, Queen Leonor of Austria and Vasco da Gama were some of the figures who worshipped Our Lady of Nazareth.
