Penha de França Chapel

About the Penha de França Chapel

Located in the heart of Funchal, the Penha de França Chapel was built in the 17th century by António Dantas. This chapel has an interesting feature: the famous Portuguese writer António Feliciano de Castilho lived in the former residence attached to this religious space.

The Penha de França Chapel takes advantage of its coastal location next to the magnificent bay of Funchal, which welcomes a large number of cruise ships every year. Interestingly enough, this small religious temple celebrates mass in English on Sundays at 10.00 a.m.

Over the years, the Penha de França Chapel has undergone various renovations that allowed the essence and beauty of the space to be maintained to this day. When visiting, you'll be amazed by the space surrounding the chapel and its exotic inside, which reflects the coherence of the interior decoration.
