Santo António Church

About Santo António Church

It was at the end of the 18th century, under the direction of royal master builder João António Vivêncio, that the Santo António Church was built. This rococo-style religious temple resulted from the need to create a new church in the parish of Santo António, since the old one was destroyed by the earthquake of 1 April 1748.

The Santo António Church in Funchal truly stands out for its beautiful and refined interior. The rococo wood carving by master carver Estêvão Teixeira de Nóbrega complements the heritage the church received from the old Santo António Chapel. It should be noted that the church underwent several repairs in 1920, and a large clock was added to one of the bell towers, which is still in operation.

Every year, in the first fortnight of June, the Santo António Church holds its traditional pilgrimages. After the pilgrimage, the churchyard is filled with various Madeiran products, including fruit, flowers and regional confectionery, which are auctioned off in the typical bazaars. Visit the Santo António Church in Funchal during its festivities and feel like a true Madeiran.
