Santo António da Mouraria Chapel
About the Santo António da Mouraria Chapel
Built in the city of Funchal next to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, the Santo António da Mouraria Chapel was commissioned in 1714 by Dr. João Aguiar. It was completed about a year later, in 1715. There's an interesting feature linked to this temple: the man responsible for founding it was buried near the chapel. His tombstone bears the following inscription: 'Here lies the miserable sinner João de Aguiar, who was Province Judge of this island'.
The small Santo António da Mouraria Chapel is characterised by its baroque style, evidenced in its door with its bulky pillows and iron rivets. Unfortunately, as years went by the chapel's interior decoration has been lost. The collection on display today is the result of restorations and acquisitions at the end of the 20th century. It should be noted that this religious space is devoted to St Anthony, one of the most worshipped and popular saints in the Catholic Church. When visiting the city of Funchal, be sure to include the Santo António da Mouraria Chapel and the historic area that surrounds it on your itinerary. Visit it and discover a historic site on the island of Madeira.
