São Martinho Church
About São Martinho Church
Built in the first half of the 19th century, São Martinho Church is located in the south of the island of Madeira, more precisely in the municipality of Funchal. It was founded by Afonso Anes near the old São Martinho chapel.
Inside São Martinho Church, attention is immediately drawn to the gilded altar and the frescoes telling the story of the church's patron saint: St. Martin. Also worth contemplating are Afonso Costa's ceiling paintings and some of his paintings in honour of Saint Martin.
In addition to being a place of worship, São Martinho Church also hosts various cultural events, which are held in the parish's Civic Centre. This religious place hosts one of the best-known Madeiran festivals on the island: the feast in honour of Saint Martin, celebrated every year during the first fortnight of November.
The church is open every day, but it is at the weekend that it attracts many locals and tourists looking to attend Mass.
