Socorro Church

About Socorro Church

Socorro Church, also known as Santa Maria Maior Church, stands in a beautiful location overlooking the sea. On your way to visit this church, you'll have the opportunity of walking in one of Madeira's historic streets, Rua de Santa Maria. There's a good chance you'll venture into one of the restaurants offering various Madeiran delicacies when you go there.

Built from a heritage of excellence, Socorro Church received some of the heritage of the ancient São Tiago temple, which was destroyed by the 1748 earthquake. Japanese 'Namban Vault' is one of the treasures inherited by the current religious institution. This artefact is proof that the island of Madeira was on the world trade route.

The enchanting atmosphere surrounding Socorro Church complements the beauty of its baroque architecture. The interior displays a remarkable wood painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a magnificent predella in the sacristy, symbolising 'The Apostles'.
