St. Peter's Church
About St. Peter's Church
Located at the heart of Funchal, St. Peter's Church was built due to the need to build a larger religious temple. This late 16th century church replaced the old, small St. Peter's chapel, which was located outside the city walls. Curiously enough, it was the first captain of Funchal, João Gonçalves Zarco, who ordered the establishment of the parish of São Pedro.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, St. Peter's Church underwent various renovations and extensions, the results of which have generally led to its current appearance. The interior of this religious space is undoubtedly the main highlight. Its baroque wood carvings and tiling recreate a sumptuous aesthetic opulence which, together with the Blessed Sacrament altarpiece, make the space a splendid artistic unit.
