Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve
Located in the municipality of Santana, on the north coast of the island of Madeira, the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve was created to protect the natural legacy of this coastal area.
It was created in 1997, driven by the local population's desire to preserve the impressive diversity of marine fauna that this area has to offer.
This Reserve, delimited between Ponta de São Jorge and Ponta do Clérigo, comprises a total area of 1710 hectares.
Being exclusively marine, the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve covers the seabed up to 100 metres deep and the islets of Rocha das Vinhas and Viúva.
As such, the conservation of fisheries and maritime resources is an indisputable priority here.
By accessing this area, through the Rocha do Navio viewpoint, a trail or cable car, you will have the opportunity to quietly contemplate this natural setting of great charm.
In terms of flora, the endemic species that embellish the cliffs stand out. In addition, this area is home to a potential habitat of the monk seal (Monachus monachus), also known as the sea wolf.
Framed by the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean, the landscapes that you can access in the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve are punctuated by the vibrant presence of life that multiplies and is preserved here in its wild state.
