The city of Funchal gathers along its coast an interesting variety of beaches and, hence, places to enjoy swimming. Praia Formosa is the largest public beach on Madeira Island, an excellent place for safe swimming as you will never need to get away from the shore. Praia Formosa is actually a group of four beaches that mix pebbles and dark sand, along hundreds of metres of coastline. In addition, the beach is connected to the Lido promenade, together with another promenade that links the beach to Câmara de Lobos.
This is a daily meeting point for many locals and also tourists, who take advantage of this maritime promenade to run or walk in an exclusively pedestrian zone.
