Madeira's Classical Orchestra
Associação Notas e Sinfonias Atlânticas
With more than 60 years of existence, Madeira's Classical Orchestra is one of the oldest orchestras in Portugal.
Recognised as the main project dedicated to classical music dissemination, the training of young musicians and the promotion of the region's artistic and cultural scene, Madeira's Classical Orchestra has established itself as a fundamental pillar of Madeiran culture.
After more than six decades of activity, the Orchestra has embraced a bold artistic project, offering seasons full of programmes from the classical, romantic and contemporary periods, for which it invites renowned conductors and soloists. The artistic management is in the hands of violinist Norberto Gomes. Madeira's Classical Orchestra has been conducted by chief conductors Zoltan Santa, Roberto Perez and Rui Massena, as well as by various guest conductors.
Madeira's Classical Orchestra dates back to the Chamber Orchestra of Madeira's Music and Fine Arts Academy, created on 13 February 1964, initially with a pedagogical mission focused on the Higher Education Music Course. In the 1970s, it became known as 'Madeira's Chamber Orchestra'.
In 1996, with the decisive support of the Regional Government of Madeira, the orchestra expanded its structure and was renamed 'Madeira's Classical Orchestra', consolidating its position as a benchmark of excellence in the cultural panorama of the region. Since 27 May 2013, Madeira's Classical Orchestra has been managed and promoted by Associação Notas e Sinfonias Atlânticas.
