Piquinho Church (Caramachão)

About the Piquinho Church (Caramanchão)

Located in the municipality of Machico, more specifically in the Caramanchão area, the Piquinho Church was built in 1967 in honour of Saint Joseph, patron saint of workers and families. Interestingly, in the 18th century there was a small primitive chapel dedicated to this saint. There are still some ruins of this chapel with great archaeological value remaining.

The Piquinho Church is well known for its Christmas celebrations. The famous childbirth masses are a major attraction for many people looking to experience one of Madeira Island's typical traditions. Socialising after Mass while sharing regional products makes it a unique tradition. If possible, visit the Piquinho Church at Christmas time. You'll certainly be surprised by the unique atmosphere that only Christmas in Madeira offers.
