Santa Beatriz Parish Church

About the Santa Beatriz Parish Church

Located at Machico, in the parish of Água de Pena, the Santa Beatriz Parish Church was built in 1745. Interestingly, this religious space was built over the rubble of an old 16th-century chapel.

The Baroque-style Santa Beatriz Parish Church has a longitudinal floor plan with a single nave, a gabled main façade and a bell tower. Nevertheless, its great wealth lies within. First and foremost, we highlight the high choir and pulpit, which give the church its unique beauty. Also noteworthy are the two side altarpieces with white and gilt carvings (late Baroque).

The Água de Pena Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Beatrice, and the historic Fonte do Seixo, are two important cultural sites worth visiting. You should also know that it is in the parish of Água de Pena that the Madeira International Airport runway was extended, one of the most significant and essential works for the socio-economic growth of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
