Caniço Parish Church
About the Caniço Parish Church
The Caniço Parish Church was built in 1783 by licence of Father José Lomelino Barreto. This religious space is located in the parish of Caniço and is part of one of the oldest parishes on the Island of Madeira. Interestingly, there were two primitive churches in the parish of Caniço: one in devotion to Saint Antão and the other dedicated to the Holy Spirit. Years later, these two religious spaces were replaced by the current Caniço Parish Church.
This rectangular temple with a single nave represents the transition between Baroque and Rococo. The Caniço Parish Church has a main façade with a gable cornice, topped by a window and a representation of the royal coat of arms. Its interior has magnificent rococo altarpieces in gilt and white wood carvings from the late 18th century.
