Coração de Jesus Church (Cardais Chapel)

About the Coração de Jesus Church (Cardais Chapel)

On the east coast of the island of Madeira, more precisely in the parish of Água de Pena, we can find the Coração de Jesus Church, a religious space that was built by Canon Henrique Modesto de Bettencourt in 1907. Destroyed in 1976 by a fire, this temple had to be rebuilt in 1987.

The Coração de Jesus Church, also known by many as the Cardais Chapel, has a revivalist and neo-mannerist architecture with a longitudinal floor plan. Inside, eyes are immediately drawn to the chancel, topped by a representation of the Agnus Dei. Also noteworthy is the altarpiece accompanied by two corbels with sculptures of Our Lady of Fatima and Saint Joseph.

Don't forget to include the Coração de Jesus Church on your itinerary to the east coast of the island of Madeira. The engagement of this religious space with the surrounding nature creates an extremely pleasant atmosphere that will certainly surprise you.
