Madre de Deus Chapel

About the Madre de Deus Chapel

Located in the municipality of Santa Cruz, more precisely in the parish of Caniço, the Madre de Deus Chapel was built in the first half of the 16th century. This religious space was built in the vicinity of an old property known as 'Fazenda das Moças', owned by sisters Isabel Álvares and Leonor Álvares.

Your journey along the east coast of Madeira must include a stop at the parish of Caniço. While visiting, behold the historic Madre de Deus Chapel, considered one of the oldest Marian temples on the island of Madeira. The Manueline style of the Madre de Deus Chapel, the Renaissance-inspired carved wood altarpiece and the chancel will certainly capture your attention.

The Madre de Deus Chapel is open to all those interested in visiting and attending Mass in a religious space with almost 500 years of history.
