Nossa Senhora da Luz Parish Church

The parish of Gaula, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, holds the church that serves as the seat of the parish of Gaula: the Nossa Senhora da Luz Parish Church. This religious space was built in the mid-18th century on the rubble of the parish's old church, which was destroyed in the 1848 earthquake. As the name suggests, this religious temple honours Our Lady of Light.

The Nossa Senhora da Luz Parish Church has a historic bell weighing around 120 kilos that was gifted by King João V, as well as a collection of liturgical implements including a 15th century processional cross.

Festivities in honour of Our Lady of Light take place every year in September. This festive period attracts many people from all over the island to the municipality of Gaula.
