São José Chapel
About the São José Chapel
São José Chapel is located In the centre of the town of Camacha, next to the emblematic 'Café Relógio'. This small temple, as the name suggests, is dedicated to Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers. It was built in 1922 by Abel Ferreira Nóbrega, but inaugurated only two years later, in 1924. Interestingly, this small religious temple is nowadays in the hands of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Victories.
Despite its simple architecture, the São José Chapel stands out for its façade with a perfect arched door, topped by a niche depicting its patron saint. Its interior, although also very simple, houses an altar worth contemplating.
The São José Chapel is considered a Heritage Site of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
