About Saint Mary Magdalene Church
Located at Porto Moniz, a place known for its unique landscapes, Saint Mary Magdalene Church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Interestingly, this church is considered one of the oldest churches in the north of the island of Madeira.
In 1798, Saint Mary Magdalene Church underwent that which is considered the most important building campaign since the space came into existence. The church gained its current layout thanks to this series of renovations and additions.
When you enter this 17th-century church, you'll come across the figure of Saint Mary Magdalene holding the bottles of perfume with which she anointed Christ's feet, a figure considered miraculous since the 17th century. Old records show that, on the day of the festivities in honour of this saint, buckets were filled with water from an irrigation well believing that it would cure the sick. Nowadays, the image of Saint Mary Magdalene goes out in procession on 22 July.
