About the Ninho da Manta Viewpoint
The Ninho da Manta viewpoint is located a few metres from the start of the Vereda do Areeiro (PR1), one of the most iconic hiking trails in Madeira. It therefore became a must-stop both for hikers, setting off from here towards the island's highest peak, and for visitors to Pico do Areeiro.
This viewpoint is located next to the Pousada do Pico do Areeiro, so-called because it is the place where the bird of prey known as the buzzard (Buteo buteo) supposedly nested. It allows you to see the parish of São Roque do Faial and the valley of Fajã da Nogueira, the chosen nesting place of the common manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).
In the same way, from the Ninho da Manta viewpoint, one can appreciate part of Madeira's Central Mountain Range. The landscape is dominated by the majesty of the rock formations, which often rise above the clouds. This is also the nesting place of the endemic species of the Zino's petrel (Pterodroma madeira), considered the most endangered seabird in Europe.
After these moments of contemplation, take the chance to discover the trail that links Pico do Areeiro (1817 m) to Pico das Torres (1851 m), ending at Pico Ruivo (1862 m).
