Santana Parish Church
About the Santana Parish Church
On the north coast, in the municipality of Santana, you'll find a church with around five centuries of history. The Santana Parish Church was built in honour of Saint Ana, a figure after which the municipality is named. This religious space is a point of great interest that should under no circumstances be left out of your itinerary when visiting the north of the island of Madeira.
It was built in the 16th century, more precisely in 1552, from a small chapel which, around 200 years later, witnessed the construction of a new sacristy on the south side of the church. Interestingly, the Santana Parish Church was built on a site where there had previously been a small chapel governed by the parish of São Jorge.
The Santana Parish Church has a heritage of excellence. First and foremost, the extremely peculiar altarpiece, made by reusing pieces from different eras: Proto-Baroque columns and pediment segments, a rococo upper section and a fantastic painting dedicated to its patron saint.
