About the Câmara de Lobos Promenade
The presence of the sea is unavoidable in the daily life of Câmara de Lobos. The city maintains a close, and centuries-old relationship with the Atlantic Ocean — the guarantor of basic resources, which plays a key role in the landscape that defines this region of Madeira's south coast. One of the most privileged ways of coming into close contact with the waters that bathe this municipality is along the Câmara de Lobos Promenade.
It is a 2.2-km-long promenade. Visitors can use this pedestrian walkway between the Ponta da Cruz area, where another promenade starts and extends to the Lido area, and the Câmara de Lobos bay, one of the municipality's main calling cards, famous for its characteristic fishing boats, the 'Xavelhas', which add colour to the scenery.
This route crosses Caminho da Trincheira and ends near the bay's car park. In this area, visitors can enjoy the gardens that have been recently redeveloped with the introduction of several tree species. The fact that part of the Câmara de Lobos Promenade is built on pillars allows for lessening its environmental impact and, therefore, keeping the natural beauty of the cliffs virtually intact.
