About the Lombada dos Marinheiros Viewpoint
Set off to discover the most enchanting landscapes of Madeira's west coast is an enriching and certainly surprising adventure. On that route, you cannot miss the Lombada dos Marinheiros Viewpoint, located in the municipality of Calheta.
This observatory wins visitors over right from the start due to the breadth of the perspective it offers. The vibrant and contrasting but harmonious colours of the Atlantic Ocean and the green valleys of the coastline stand out in the landscape that surrounds it.
The Lombada dos Marinheiros Viewpoint is located at Fajã da Ovelha, offering a unique perspective over part of this locality. We should note that this parish still bears a strong historical mark: it was created in the mid-16th century and Gonçalo Ferreira de Carvalho, one of the first settlers of the island, came to own land here.
Benefiting from a privileged geographical position, the Lombada dos Marinheiros Viewpoint also allows you to see the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse, at an altitude of 290 metres, on the westernmost tip of the island.
This viewpoint was created in 1936 and is still a popular stopping point for visitors to the region. It has benches so that visitors can calmly enjoy their surroundings.
