Portinho Beach

About the Portinho Beach

The parish of Jardim do Mar became a hot spot for surfing. The Portinho Beach is one of the most popular destinations for surfers coming from all over the island and the world.

Made of basalt pebbles, the Portinho Beach is located near the centre of the typical town of Jardim do Mar, at the eastern end of the parish. It has a pontoon and a ramp to facilitate access to the sea for bathers and athletes.

This bathing resort is widely sought after by surfers, who find the perfect conditions for surfing here. Between 'point breaks' and 'reef breaks', the swell is particularly attractive for more experienced athletes. It is a privileged area to receive 'swells' from the North Atlantic. As such, this area has been chosen to host several national and international competitions. It has hosted, for example, the 'Red Bull Big Wave Challenge' and the 'World Surfing Championship'.

Enjoy the visit to Portinho Beach and explore the narrow streets of the parish of Jardim do Mar. Located on a 'fajã' sheltered by rocky cliffs, it has a unique elegance.
