St. Peter's Church - Ponta do Pargo

About the St. Peter's Church - Ponta do Pargo

Created in the mid-16th century, the parish of Ponta do Pargo was established in the small St. Peter's chapel, which underwent renovation works in 1599 and 1620. The current religious space is a reflection of the 1851 construction works, leaving nothing of its ancient times.

St. Peter's church stands on the west coast of the island of Madeira, in one of its most characteristic parishes - Ponta do Pargo. The flat, green fields are accompanied by spectacular landscapes that award a special charm to this Mannerist church. Architecturally, this religious space stands out for its beautiful bell tower, a gabled main façade and a fantastic arched portal. The interior has one of the oldest pieces of the island of Madeira: a gilded silver chalice with a six-pointed star base. The chalice is estimated to have appeared before St. Peter's church was built.

The parish of Ponta do Pargo is an inviting place for all kinds of family gatherings. Here, you'll have the chance to stroll around the flat, characteristic fields of this part of the island and, above all, to discover a splendid church with more than 150 years of history.
