About the Lugar de Baixo Lagoon
Located in the parish of Ponta do Sol, the Lugar de Baixo Lagoon has natural features of great interest. It is a unique place in the archipelago, where the richness of nature reigns in all its vitality.
Being located on the southwest coast of the island of Madeira, the Lugar de Baixo Lagoon benefits from the favourable weather conditions of the area.
This is the only tidal lagoon in the whole archipelago and is widely used as a stopping point for many migratory bird species or as a nesting place. The rich biodiversity present here attracts many ornithological tourists to this area.
It is, of course, one of the best spots in Madeira for the famous birdwatching, ideal for experienced or less experienced birders. To do so, you can contact one of the specialised operators on the island, who provide the necessary equipment, such as binoculars, a telescope and a bird guide. In the Lugar de Baixo Lagoon, it is therefore possible to find species that are uncommon in the rest of Madeira, such as the little egret or the moorhen, for example.
Bringing together unique characteristics, it is a must for any Nature lover.
The Lugar de Baixo Lagoon is the only tidal lagoon in the archipelago. Many migratory birds use this unique site for nesting or as a staging area.
