Nossa Senhora da Luz Church
About the Nossa Senhora da Luz Church
Located in the centre of the town of Ponta do Sol, the Nossa Senhora da Luz Church has a great historical and architectural interest. It is one of the most emblematic monuments on the west coast of the island of Madeira.
This temple was built in the late 15th century. However, in 1708, the façade was rebuilt to enlarge the body of the church. It therefore displays typical features of both Manueline and Neo-Mannerist religious architecture. T
he Nossa Senhora da Luz Church consists of a single nave and a square bell tower. Inside, there are various side chapels, from which we highlight the chancel's 'alfarje' panelled ceiling, in Hispanic-Arab style. This space also has tiled walls, an armchair and a main altarpiece in gilt and grey-blue woodcarvings, with five oil paintings.
The baptismal font also deserves special attention. Decorated in green ceramic, in the Mudéjar style, it is believed to have come from the city of Seville, in Spain. This is a unique work in Portugal. The Nossa Senhora da Luz Church also has a set of precious silver religious implements. So be sure to visit this unavoidable monument.
