Ponta do Sol Pier

About the Ponta do Sol Pier

With a peculiar profile from an architectural point of view, the Ponta do Sol Pier is a point of interest with great historical value. This place should be included in any tour around the west coast of the island of Madeira.

This building was commissioned by the Ponta do Sol City Hall in the mid-19th century. Designed by Tibério Augusto Blanc, a captain and engineer, it was inaugurated on 9 September 1849. It came to be called 'Duke of Luxembourg Pier', after the donation made to the town by Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg, on the occasion of his visit.

The Ponta do Sol Pier stands out architecturally for its wide perfect round arch, which connects the coastal cliff to the pier. It should be noted that the entire structure was built using regional stone, such as basalt, ashlars and pebbles. At the entrance to the pier you can find an old prison, carved in the rock, and the guard house. For a long time, the Ponta do Sol Pier was the safest and widest one in the whole southwestern slope of the island of Madeira.

It currently houses a restaurant and a bar overlooking the Ponta do Sol Beach.
