São Sebastião Chapel

About the São Sebastião Chapel

This chapel's history can be traced back to the second half of the 16th century, in 1597, at Ponta do Sol, when a small temple was built as a tribute to its patron saint: St. Sebastian, a saint evoked against plagues and wars.

In 1734 São Sebastião Chapel was in ruins, but it was later rebuilt. This reconstruction kept some of its original elements, so that the essence of this religious space did not disappear. The altarpiece was one of the elements preserved in the new chapel.

São Sebastião Chapel is based on a simple longitudinal floor plan and Mannerist religious architecture. Particularly noteworthy is the façade with a round-arched portal surmounted by a trim and cornice. When entering the chapel, your eyes are immediately drawn to the neoclassical altarpiece. And if the interior doesn't wow you, the landscape certainly will! A visit to this religious space will constitute an opportunity to enjoy a magnificent view over the town of Ponta de Sol.
