Terra Chã Viewpoint

The Terra Chã Viewpoint offers a different panoramic view of some of Porto Santo's most emblematic spots, such as the town of Vila Baleira, Ilhéu de Cima or Pico Branco.

Located on the east coast of the island, the viewpoint is in an area integrated in the European Network of sites of community importance: the Natura 2000 Network. Here you can see some cypress trees planted in the early 20th century. There is also a stone house nearby, which serves as support for the team responsible for reintroducing endemic plants and carrying out scientific studies.

For hiking enthusiasts, a visit to the Terra Chã Viewpoint may be the ideal pretext to walk along one of the island's best-known footpaths: the Pico Branco e Terra Chã Footpath.

This is a 2.7 km trail that leads to Pico Branco. This is the second highest peak in Porto Santo, at 450 metres, and got its name due to the existence of a white stone column and many white lichens known as 'urzela' (Rocella sp.). It's believed that this route was created to transport agricultural products, with the help of donkeys.
