Madeira provides many diverse reasons to make it a destination of choice. A very appealing year-round climate and the Island's natural beauty will make most activities more attractive and none more so than the option to play some golf in the sunshine surrounded by stunning backdrops and views that are simply breathtaking.

There are currently three golf courses on the Madeira archipelago: two on Madeira Island (which will be featured in this article) and one in Porto Santo Island (which will have a dedicated publication soon). Another golf course is being built in Ponta do Pargo, on Madeira Island, bringing the count to four golf infrastructures by 2024. All this offer makes Madeira an option as a golf destination on a landscape that could well be considered a golfers' paradise.

My first round was at Palheiro Golf Club, which is located on the 150-acre Palheiro Nature Estate, also home to Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro. We had two very relaxing nights in the hotel, which is elegant and sophisticated. The rooms are a mix of classical and bespoke design, mixing the history of the hotel with contemporary touches. When arriving in the car park of the estate, you will be met with one of the best views on the Island, situated 500m above sea level and overlooking the city of Funchal. The uninterrupted vantage point is breathtaking. It is also worth noting that this view is shared throughout the clubhouse restaurant, bar and terrace areas.

Casa Velha do Palheiro

The course itself is beautifully manicured from tee to green and provides a test for all abilities. The course meanders through a botanical woodland with vibrant colours that are prominent throughout Madeira and are on full display on every hole at Palheiro Golf Club.

The golf course layout offers great variety and will test every part of your game! Relatively generous fairways but the greens are well protected, and although many provide a large target area, depending on the pin position, it is often important to find a favourable side of the green to make putting that little bit easier. The quality of the green complexes was excellent. The first 5 holes provide mountains and greenery as your backdrop, and when you reach the 6th hole the views of the ocean return. The 13th and 15th holes are my personal favourites. The 13th is a Par 3, rivalling many in beauty and design. Reaching the green will require a shot across the ravine filled with an abundance of colour. The target is small and slightly elevated, bunkers await anything that may be short. The 15th is a Par 5 dogleg right to left, in addition to being a well-designed hole the infinity green provides views of the ocean are only bettered by that of the 18th green and the clubhouse. Once your round is complete, don’t rush anywhere, just take a seat on the terrace, and enjoy the warm welcome and that never-ending view.
Next up was my visit to Santo Da Serra Golf Club which can be found high in the hills overlooking Machico Bay. The 27-hole golf course provides golfers with those spectacular views that appear in abundance in Madeira.

The setting is once again what I would describe as a botanical garden with water hazards, large white bunkers and breathtaking vistas, and as with Palheiro Golf, the experience begins on arrival. When entering the car park, you will be met with views that lead out to a peninsula into the ocean which is quite often shrouded with a low-lying atmospheric mist due to our location being 2000ft above sea level. The Country Club-style clubhouse was opened in 2000 which followed the opening of 27 holes at Santo Da Serra in 1998. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and I felt like a member rather than a visitor. Refreshments on the terrace for post-round analysis could well last long into the evening!

The golf course opens with a tee shot from an elevated position taking in all the landscape, a tee location that is irrelevant to the shot will leave you smiling at what awaits. The fairways are generous, and with 4 optional tees on each hole, every golfer has the choice to play the course that reflects their ability, something which I really like to see at golf courses.

Golf Santo da Serra

The signature holes at Santo Da Serra Golf Club come early in the round, holes 3 and 4 dominated by the views on offer but are, of course, very well-designed holes. The 3rd was my favourite, a Par 5 which was reachable in two but with a high risk and reward factor which is how a good Par 5 should play. The condition throughout the golf course was immaculate and an absolute pleasure to play.

Santo Da Serra has 27 holes, allowing golfers to mix loops of nine, ensuring several visits to the same golf course will feel like a new experience on each visit. The club also has some excellent practice facilities including a driving range, so no excuses to not arrive on the first tee ready to go!

I enjoyed my visit to both courses which are very different to each other but equally as impressive. The Palheiro Estate and Gardens are well worth visiting, and the 5-star luxury country house - Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro -, is a Relais & Chateaux member set in the Palheiro gardens, so transfers to and from the golf course are provided. The option of staying in nearby Funchal provides easy access to both golf courses from the city centre.

If you are planning a golf holiday in Madeira, then I would recommend you check out the Madeira Golf Passport. The passport will provide you with 3 or 5 rounds of golf at either Santo da Serra Golf Club or Palheiro Golf, (or a mix of the two) at a reduced price compared to booking individual rounds.
