Typical and Traditional Drinks
Liquid History
Madeira has plenty of traditional drinks that accompany its gastronomy and celebrate the island's history. From artisanal liqueurs to exclusive soft drinks and local beers - and of course, wine - each drink offers a unique flavour and a direct connection to Madeiran traditions.
Nikita
Also originating from Câmara de Lobos, Nikita is the ideal choice for warm, sunny days. Refreshing and flavourful, this drink combines ice cream, pineapple, pineapple juice, and pale beer, resulting in a creamy and tropical blend. For those who prefer a non-alcoholic version, there are variations that replace the beer with a soft drink, preserving the fruity and delightful flavour.
Laranjada and Brisa Maracujá
Laranjada, created in 1872 in Madeira, is one of the oldest soft drinks in the world. Refreshing and effervescent, with a distinctive orange peel flavour, it is often mixed with wine or Cerveja Coral during festivities in the archipelago, keeping alive a tradition that is part of Madeiran culture.
Created in 1970, Brisa Maracujá was the world’s first soft drink made with pure passion fruit juice. Made with purple passion fruit - widely grown on the island of Madeira - and lightly carbonated water, it stands out for its refreshing aroma and is a drink much appreciated by both locals and visitors.
Coral
This lager-style beer, brewed with Czech malts and hops, stands out for its golden colour, smooth flavour, and light body. Fermented and matured at low temperatures, it is refreshing and aromatic - perfect to pair with the island’s typical dishes. In Madeira, it's the perfect choice for celebrating and toasting on any occasion.
